Sant Antoni paves West End’s main street for Okuda’s painting

The mayor has already announced his decision to go ahead with this work in West End despite the agreement of the May plenary session against the contracting of handpicked of artistic works

The mayor of Sant Antoni, Marcos Serra continues with his idea of painting the pavement of Calle Santa Agnès in the center of the West End with a work by artist Okuda San Miguel and the pavement is already being laid and the road surface is being prepared. A municipal spokeswoman confirmed yesterday to this newspaper that the layer of what looks like continuous concrete that is being installed on the asphalt of the street is for the work of Okuda and is scheduled to be carried out in March with a goal for it to be ready in April.

This project provoked one of the clashes a few months ago that the mayor has faced during this term with his former colleague Joan Torres, from El Pi.

Torres is strongly opposed to this artistic work being carried out. Even last May, the councilman of El Pi managed, with the support of PSOE-Reinicia and Unidas Podemos, that the plenary approved a motion to prevent the direct hiring of Okuda. Specifically, the majority of the plenary approved that all street sculptures and artistic works be contracted through a public tender.

That same day, the mayor had already warned that this agreement was going to remain a dead letter because the hiring of Okuda should be approved by the governing board and, he said, the plenary could not “interfere” in this executive body. In fact, in September, Serra said that the decision had already been made, despite the resistance of his still political partner Joan Torres. “The drawing up of the contract and the budget item remains to be completed,” said the mayor, who also acknowledged that there were still technical issues, such as “ensuring the quality of the paint to be resistant to detergents and the passage of vehicles,” in order for it to “hold up well throughout the season”.
