The opposition accuses the mayor of Sant Antoni of being a “chief and self indulgent” over Okuda’s painting

The City Council explains that the paint will include special resins that will make Okuda's work last longer and that it will be retouched every year.

The opposition groups are lashing out against the mayor of Sant Antoni, Marcos Serra for his decision to cover the ground on Calle Santa Agnès, the nerve center of the West End, with a painting by the artist Okuda San Miguel, despite the fact that last May the municipal plenary approved by majority vote that all artistic works should be contracted through a public competition. PSOE-Reinicia describes Serras decision on Okuda’s work as a “whim”, Unidas Podemos brand him as “self indulgent” and a “chief” while El Pi, former government partner of the PP, also refers to the decision as “capricious and authoritarian”.

Only the councilman of Ciudadanos, José Ramón Martín, also a former political partner of the PP, considers the mayor’s proposal “a good initiative” because it “contrasts” with the image of the West End. He only raises his doubts about “the durability” of the work. “With the price tag on it, if it only holds up for one season it’s not justified. The whole town thinks it will be something like the Bloop Festival. If it disappears after just one season, I don’t think it will be very beneficial,” he adds.

The cost of the project amounts to 220,000 euros. The Consistory will finance it with European funds; specifically, with the aid that the Govern has earmarked (3 million euros) for Sant Antoni to improve the areas of excessive tourism. A municipal spokeswoman explains that the paint is of  “high quality” and has “special resins which provide greater durability to Okuda’s work”. In addition, there will be “annual maintenance to touch up any possible flaws” notes the same source.
