There isn’t and there won’t be a Mediterranean hurricane in Ibiza, it’s a squall, says the Aemet

While several meteorologists warn that the storm Blas can become a medicane, the State Meteorological Agency denies it

The storm has also reached the meteorologists. While some warn that the storm Blas over the Balearic Islands is about to become a medicane or Mediterranean hurricane, the Aemet (Agencia Estatal de Meteorología) denies that this phenomenon will occur.

What is clear is that the island has been experiencing, for days, turbulent weather and unusual, persistent rain, wind and bad sea conditions. This situation means that the meteorologists will be permanently attentive to the slight changes registered by the satellites. The interpretation of these data varies according to the eye of the beholder and some see that the Blas storm could become a medicane in the next few hours.

The medicane

And what is a medicane? It is similar to a tropical storm – its name comes from the combination of the words Mediterranean and hurricane – on a smaller scale whose characteristics are very strong and constant winds with abrupt changes of direction and torrential rains .

Agustí Jansà, physicist, meteorologist and former delegate of the Aemet on the Balearic Islands, published today on his Twitter account an image of the satellite with the following information: “Blas already appears to be in the process of becoming medicane”.

And not only him. Other experts have explained in various media how over the Balearic Islands Blas storm will be mutating to a medicane, which would become the fourth in the history of the archipelago since such data are recorded, according to Jansà, after those recorded in 1986, 1996 and 2003.
