The storm Blas, which affects Ibiza, could become a medicane, a Mediterranean tropical cyclone, imminently, as reported by eltiempo.es on Wednesday.
According to the forecast offered by this meteorology website, the situation in the Mediterranean will become increasingly more complicated with the storm Blas as in the coming hours, the low pressure center could undergo a tropicalization processย according to some numerical models, thus acquiring some characteristics of a tropical system.
The Balearic Islands will be the region most affected by the effects of this cyclone: strong winds and waves and above all heavy rainfall day after day. Wind gusts could reach 80-90 kilometers per hour or even higher in the most exposed areas of the archipelago until the end of Thursday. The sea will be very altered with waves of 3-4 meters.
Rainfall accumulation on the islands may be more than 100 liters per square meter over 12 hours (orange level warning) and even more than 200 liters per square meter at times in the north of Mallorca throughout the course of the storm. They may be accompanied by thunderstorms and although they will not be continuous, rainfall will be persistent over several days, and could continue on the islands until at least Saturday.
Catalonia and the Valencian Community will also experience a storm due to the presence of this cyclone. Catalonia will have rainfall especially in the eastern half, while in Valencia it will likely be concentrated in the south of Valencia and north of Alicante. Both regions will have sea storms with winds from the north-northeast and waves between 3 and 5 meters.
