The Ombudsman of the Public Health System of the Balearic Islands, Dr. Micaela Llull, dealt with complaints and requests for information from 16 people in the Pitiusas during 2020 (14 in Ibiza and 2 in Formentera). At the Balearic level, 235 in total were received in the ombudsman’s office, of which 133, 56.5%, presented some kind of complaint and Llull responded and closed 207, 88%.
By type, there were 133 complaints ; 74 claims and 22 requests for information, according to the Ombudsman’s report. In addition, there were three suggestions and three acknowledgements. As for the complaints, the main reasons in 2020 were the delay and cancellation of appointments with specialists, surgery, diagnostic tests and treatment in hospitals (54); the unsatisfactory relations with health centre staff (28), and complaints related to covid (27).
In second place are complaints about costs for treatment, diagnostic tests, private care or transfer; difficulty in accessing the telephone or lack of care, among other reasons.
In fact, the attention provided by the office of the Ombudsman’s office is registering an increase this year, as in the first six months 122 complaints have been received, according to the Balearic Health Councillor. Patricia Gomez visited yesterday the office of the Ombudsman, in Palma, and considered that the moderate volume of complaints reveals the quality of the health system, while calling on the public to make suggestions: “They are important as a way to listen and improve our policies”. Llull, for her part, said that “the ombudsman can see inequities” and introduce improvements in the system that benefit everyone based on the complaints.
