Arranz warns of a “obvious increase” in covid in Ibiza that “may be intensified.”

The Committee on Infectious Diseases' representative assures that the delta covid variety is still "the majority," but anticipates that omicron will be "soon."

Javier Arranz, spokesman for the Balearic Islands Committee on Infectious Diseases, said Wednesday that the progression of the wave of covid infections in Ibiza is now in “obvious increase,” albeit “a little later than in Mallorca and Menorca.” In fact, Arranz feels that the coming days “may accelerate” if the people does not take precautions. The cumulative incidence at 14 days is 520 instances per 100,000 population, up from 378 a week before. Furthermore, the incidence at seven days is 293. At 14 days, there are 170 AI cases in Formentera (67 a week earlier), and 613 in the Balearic Islands (556 seven days ago).

The increase in covid cases in Ibiza, with the delta variety still predominating, is due to “increased contacts” during the All Saints celebrations and the long weekend of the Constitution. “Now we discover all these cases,” Arranz said at a press conference, adding that the variation omicron is a “Christmas present” that “will undoubtedly proliferate.”

Indeed, the infectious disease specialist stated that, while the occurrence of the new South African variation in the Balearic Islands is “slower” than in other locations or nations, it “will be prominent in a short period.” “Almost sure this week will escalate,” he predicted, noting to what is happening in the United Kingdom, where ómicron doubles the number of cases every two or three days. “We will not be particularly different,” Arranz warned, adding that “it would be good” if the population took precautionary measures to slow down its evolution and that “its growth is not so explosive,” because, while the population “seems” to be “milder,” the number of hospitalizations could be “very large.”
