Employment in Ibiza suffers a generation gap: older people exceed 2019 figures, young people do not

Between the ages of 16 and 44 there are still 5,000 fewer jobs in Ibiza than before the pandemic, while from the age of 45 there are already 2.3% more people under employment and contributing to the Social Security

The employment in Ibiza after the pandemic is not the same for all ages. The youngest people are having a more difficult time integrating or rejoining the labour market, according to the latest statistics on contributors compiled by Ibestat based on the information provided by the Social Security. In Ibiza, for example, in the band between 16 and 44 years there were  even fewer workers than there were at the same time in 2019 at the end of September. They now total 41,078 contributors; two years ago there were 46,009: that’s almost 5,000 fewer jobs (-10.7%).

However, the opposite is observed for those aged 45 and over, where the number of contributors for 2019 has already been exceeded: this age group now includes 31,018 workers, 2.3% more than two seasons ago.

By age bracket, it is striking that between 16 and 19 years there has not been so few employees (626) on the island of Ibiza since 2015; in the 20 to 24 years age group (3,507) since 2014; in the 25 to 29 years group (6,215) since 2010; 30 to 34 years (8,997) since 2012; 35 to 39 years (10,500) since 2015, and in the 40 to 44 year group, since 2018.

But from that age onwards, the trend changes. After the collapse of 2020, the contributors of the older age group have recovered to such an extent that they have even exceeded the precovid figures: there have never been so many employees in the third quarter in the 45 to 54 year age group, and 60 and older. The 55-59 age group (6,489) has not yet recovered the figures from 2019 (6,556), but they are considerably higher than 2018 (6,349).
