Torradas and chirigotas spice up Ibiza’s Carnival celebration

In mid-January, the Ibiza Town Hall announced that the Carnival parade, which was traditionally held on Sunday morning, will be held this year on Saturday afternoon, “as in many other cities on the peninsula”. The reasons for this change were explained this morning by the councillor for Festivities, Participation and Neighbourhoods of Vila, Francisco Torres, during the presentation of the programme of events planned for the festival of Don Carnal: “What we want is for participation to be greater and for people to then continue the party in Vara de Rey and attend the prize-giving ceremony”. The decision, he said, was taken in coordination with the rest of the island’s town halls to avoid overlapping and to make it easier for participants to take part in other rúas.

This morning, the Department of Festivities did not have definitive figures for the participation in the rúa because is still open until this Thursday, February 8, the deadline for registrationthrough the electronic headquarters or in person at the Citizen Attention Service (SAC). What Torres did highlight is that this year the City Council of Ibiza has increased to 18.000 euros the money to be distributed among the winners. The jurywhich this year will be made up of professionals related to the artistic worldwill award a maximum of 18 prizes, divided among the five established categories (comparsas in general, school comparsas, social comparsas, dance academies and individual or couple).

COMPOSITION OF THE JURY

The carnival parade of Vila will depart on February 10 at 5 p.m from Santa Eulària Avenue to then go through Bartomeu de Roselló, Isidor Macabich, Valencia Street and Avenida de España. The route will end at Vara de Rey, approximately “two hours later”, with the music of the unofficial hymn of Ibiza, ‘Roqueta, sa meva roca’, as a climax.

An inclusive street

Torres stressed that, like the parade of the Three Kings last January 5, the rúa “will be inclusive.” “For the senior citizens70 seats will be placed in Bartomeu de Roselló Avenue (corner with Ignasi Wallis) and another 70 in Isidor Macabich, in the area of the Peace Park. Also, 30 chairs will be reserved for people with special needs in the area of the church of Roser and when the street passes through this parish, the volume of the music will be lowered. In addition, anti-noise helmets will be handed out for the people with acoustic hypersensitivity“, he detailed.

The float of the Town Hall will be the one that will open the street, reminding the public that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the declaration of Ibiza as a World Heritage Site. The author of the design, Streakka, said that the decoration will include “a Tanit, a Punic mask and the cathedral of Ibiza with its organ”.

After the end of the parade on Saturday, in the tent of Vara de Rey, where the program of festivities was presented today, the following will begin “a great Carnival party” in which the prizes of the rúa will be distributed. There will be entertainment and music by DJs D-Ramones, at 7 pm, and Ismaso, at 10 pm. At 8 p.m. there will be popular torradawhich will be free of charge for the first 700 attendees.
