Miguel Angel Riera, the Episcopal delegate of Caritas, is a direct witness of how the number of people coming to his Santa Cruz parish has increased in recent years, in fact, he has never received more requests for help from young homeless women.
Increase in women on the streets
“Never, in my 27 years as a priest and another 27 years in Caritas, have I seen a female profile of poverty as numerous as today. We have detected a large increase in the number of young women, who find themselves on the street and who come to Caritas as a last resort. To see one or two a week who tell me they have nowhere to go is something I have never seen before. It’s a brutal change and we hope that something will be done to solve this problem.”
