Man who died in Ibiza shantytown fire identified

The investigation into the fire remains open by the Policía Nacional in Ibiza.

The Policía Nacional in Ibiza has identified the man who died in Saturday’s fire in the shantytowns of sa Joveria on Ibiza, according to sources close to the investigation. Although for the moment the investigation remains open by the Policía Nacional and no further details are known.

The fire was reported at 21.55 hours and immediately the Policía Municipal, the fire brigade, the Policía Nacional patrols and several ambulances were sent to the scene, as it was not known how many people could be in the dwellings.

Two municipal police officers were the first to attend to the victim, who was still conscious and spoke to two local police officers shortly before he died. “They have come for me”, he said twice to the agents who found him, engulfed in flames, next to some shacks hidden between the Can Misses Hospital and the Recinto Ferial.

In recent years there have been several fires in these shantytowns. The most striking case occurred in July 2018, with up to three fires in one week. The most serious one ravaged three caravans of a group of street vendors and a shack shared by four homeless people.
