Ibiza’s recycling rate reaches nearly 40%, yet fails to meet legal requirements

Production of waste thrown in the grey bin increases by 7.8% compared to 2021, but falls by 32% compared to 2019 due to improved recycling and organic recovery

The recycling rate of waste in Ibiza, has not yet reached the 50% target set by the Balearic waste law of 2019, but it has almost doubled since 2019, reaching 31.5% in 2022.

The increase in selective waste collection figures has affected all fractions, with the organic waste recovery rate experiencing the most significant increase, rising from 5,599 to 9,348 tons. The implementation of the collection of organic waste from households and businesses and the sorting of waste at the triage plant has contributed to the increase in recycling rates. However, the recycling rate for packaging (the yellow container) still needs improvement. The landfill at Ca na Putxa can last for another seven to eight years with the current rate of waste production and management.

The new waste master plan, which replaces the current one that expires in three years, must foresee alternative options to Ca na Putxa, such as its expansion, the construction of a landfill in another area of the island, an incinerator, or the transfer of waste to Mallorca.
