Hotelier on Ibiza claims disturbance from construction works is driving away clients

The hotelier criticizes the fact that the building code, which will come into force in June, does not force the construction works to stop.

One year later, the owner of the tourist establishment White Apartments Ibiza, in Platja d’en Bossa, once again condemns the disturbances caused by the construction works of a housing development on a plot located right next door. Businessman Joan Ferré claims that the noise has already caused the loss of some clients. “We have already registered cancellations. These are people who have demanded their money back and have left. People want to be in the pool without having to put up with the noise of construction work,” he says.

The tourist establishment has opened its doors this week with the background noise of the works, which are attached to the terrace and pool. “A few days ago there was an exceptional din, but since then the hammering has been constant,” he says.

Construction noise not the only problem

The nuisance is not only limited to noise. Ferré alerted the Policía Local yesterday after finding the hammocks on the pool terrace splattered with concrete. “It’s outrageous,” he says. The agents took photos and informed the person in charge of the construction that they must take measures to avoid dirtying the facilities of the adjoining establishment. Ferré also shows his concern because, according to the information that the person in charge of the work transferred to the Policía Local, in the next few days another level will be erected and, for this, concrete will be poured.

Despite the fact that the tourist season has already begun, the municipal bylaw that the Ibiza Town Hall approves every year to minimize the nuisance of works in tourist areas will not come into force until June (it ends on September 30). There is no obligation to stop the construction, but it is required that the works do not start before 10am, and end 6pm. It does prohibit those works that “inevitably” involve “a high level of noise”, such as foundations or the lifting of structures or the use of radial saws or jack hammers.
