The National Police have arrested an hotelier from Sant Pere Pescador, Girona, with a house in Ibiza for alleged labor exploitation. The police have also arrested a manager of the premises, who was aware of his situation, for an alleged crime against workers’ rights, as well as for labor exploitation of the foreign citizen.

The worker had a regular working day of between 10 and 12 hours with no breaks and lived in precarious conditions, as she explained in the complaint. Thus, the victim complained that she had to share a room in a very small space and that she also had to take care of the storage and laundry functions.

Among the duties as a company worker, he had the obligation to show availability 24 hours a day to meet the needs of customers.

Forced to travel to Ibiza to clean his house

As for the days off, in theory the contract provided for three every two weeks. However, two of those three days he had to travel to the employer’s home in Barcelona to do cleaning work, so the reality was that he barely had a day off every two weeks.

In addition to this domicile, the employer also required him to move, during the summer season, to his domicile in Ibiza to perform the same cleaning tasks, without being paid for any of these tasks.

The National Police is now investigating whether the hiring method used with this employee has been repeated by the employer with other potential workers previously.

The worker who has denounced this case, for his part, stated that he received constant threats from both his manager and his boss. They constantly threatened him, warning him of his illegal status and that he could be expelled from the country, according to the police.

His superiors also made him false promises so that he would hope to get a work contract to regularize his stay in Spain, although the agents found out that this was totally false and that it was done with the sole purpose of keeping him tied up.

The victim managed to report her situation of exploitation through the number 900 105 090 of Attention to Victims of Human Trafficking of National Police.
