Fuel prices post biggest spike in months following the end of the discount

Filling the tank has become considerably more expensive in recent weeks due to fuel price fluctuations and the end of the 20 cent bonus.

The start of 2023 is proving to be complicated for all those who have to fill up their fuel tanks regularly to be able to get to work. On January 1st, the Government put an end to the 20 cent per liter fuel bonus for all citizens – leaving it to remain only for transporters or farmers – which it had applied on April 1st, an unfortunate blow to the pocket that his not isolated. The reason for this, a rise in costs during the first two weeks of 2023 – which the first vice-president of the Government, Nadia Calviño, already announced could happen in the short term after the end of the discount – that has not been seen since October, when OPEC agreed to cut oil production by two million barrels per day which led to a month of rising costs.

Specifically, according to the latest data given offered by the Ministry of Ecological Transition corresponding to last Sunday, the average price per liter of gasoline at fuel stations stood at 1.628€, while that of diesel was 1.677€. These values represent an increase of 2.32% (almost four cents plus the 20 cent discount on gasoline) and 1.14% (2 cents plus the bonus on diesel) compared to the values noted at the close of 2022. This is not a small increase.

With these figures, putting 50 liters of diesel A into a tank costs for an average Spaniard today 83.85€, 6€ more than it cost on the last day of 2022 (77.9€). Even more significant is the increase that has occurred in Gasoline 95, where that 50 liters is currently equivalent to 81.4€, almost 12 more than just 2 weeks ago. Differences, produced by the oscillations that occur in the international rates of both refined fuel products, of great importance for the income of the consumers.
