Aída Miró shows her Bronx women in Ibiza

The exhibition, which has travelled several times between the island and New York, will be on display in Ebusus.

The long journey of the ‘Tribute to Woman & Diversity’ project, with portraits of women from the New York neighbourhood of the Bronx by Ibizan artist Aída Miró, is finally coming to Ibiza. The exhibition ‘Women of the Bronx’ can be seen from the 1st to 29th of July in the Sala Ebusus in Vila, with a dozen works that have covered the route between New York and Ibiza several times.

The project began in 2020 in the Ibizan’s studio in the Bronx, where she portrayed a series of women from the neighborhood. The pictures were painted in Ibiza in 2021. Last March they traveled to New York, with the support of the Institut d’Estudis Baleàrics, for an exhibition at the BX Arts Factory gallery and now they are returning to the island.

The portraits are painted in oil on canvases of different formats, all united by a red background. “Red symbolizes blood, passion, love, power, strength and passion. It is a tribute to women and the diversity of the Bronx neighborhood. I’ve been living between Ibiza and New York for eight yearsthe Bronx is my second home,” says the artist, who recalls that each of the portraits is accompanied by a short interview with the protagonist of the work, which can be accessed through a QR code.

The women portrayed are Lorine Padilla, Olga Correa, Laura Alvarez, Yolanda Rodriguez, Monica Martinez, Gloria Zapata, Bella, Lola Jane, Kephera Ife and Margie Diaz.

The project started with a grant from the Bronx Council of the Arts and BXArts Factory to paint a large mural in the neighborhood, but due to the impossibility of doing so because of the covid pandemic, it took a turn to reach this collection of portraits, which was first exhibited virtually through BXArts Factory.

“With this exhibition I intend to give visibility to women and the Bronx, from the look and perspective of the women who inhabit it. It is a neighborhood with a great stigma, where I consider that diversity greatly enriches the place. Some were born there, others have come like me to live there and are part of its population. The interviews are a way of getting to know the portrayed women better, as if they could step out of the painting and tell you their story for 12 minutes,” says Miró, who expresses the emotion experienced during the exhibition at BX Art Gallery, where the portrayed women were finally able to see the works and listen to the interviews.

Another exhibition

In addition, Miró will have during this month of July a second exhibition on the island, which can be seen from July 4 to 18 at the boutique Hotel Las Mimosas in Cala de Bou. It is entitled ‘Tanit-Demeter’on the Punic and Greek goddesses

Some of the works were created ten years ago for the exhibition ‘Mitomorfosis’ at Club Diario de Ibiza. The rest have been created recently mixing different techniques such as spray, gold leaf or resin. Some of them have been exhibited in the recent exhibition ‘Hereva’, again at the Club Diario de Ibiza and others are exhibited for the first time. The opening will be on Tuesday July 4 and will feature live music by Oggie Marinsky and dance by Marta Chandra from 7.30 pm.
