The Capitanía Marítima on Ibiza and Formentera, Luis Gascón, considers all the threats that have been avoided since the flames devoured the ‘Aria SF‘ last Thursday, before the criticism thrown from Consell and City Council of Santa Eulària for the management of the emergency, in which this body, Capitanía Marítima, has the power to coordinate and authorize the procedures that are chosen. The head of this governing body recalled that, in the operation, the lives of the occupants of the burned yacht were saved, and defended that, with the transfer of the yacht from Cala Saona to the waters of Santa Eulària, a possible spill in a Natural Park has also been avoided.
Capitanía Marítima stresses that all means are deployed
Gascón highlighted the work of the professionals in charge of supervising and minimizing the environmental damage of the ‘Aria SF’, with the placement of two barriers around the boat and the removal by divers of the diesel stored in the fuel tank. In addition, he stressed that “all means are deployed” and that Salvamento Marítimo, which has a control boat, are constantly monitoring the work, while the Guardia Civil also carries out inspections to check the status of the area, he reported. In this sense, he specified that the cleaning of the polluting material “corresponds to the Autonomous Community, which is aware of the crisis”, since, he details, the Salvamento Marítimo tower remains in contact with 112.
Asked about a possible delay in the placement of the perimeter barriers -the ship sank about 7:30pm on Sunday and the first of them was placed on Monday afternoon-, Gascón argued that although it was not possible to place them immediately, they were installed and added that, as of yesterday, the Capitanía Marítima had not detected any type of contamination in the water.
