The Govern does not rule out eliminating covid passport next week

The Executive shares the idea of eliminating the use of face masks outdoors as of Thursday and lifting the requirement of the covid passport next week

The Govern won’t rule out lifting the covid passport requirement next week. The Superior Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands (TSJB) authorized the Executive to demand this certificate, which accredits the complete course of vaccination or to have recovered from the virus, until February 28th.

However, the Minister of Economic Model and spokesman of the Government, Iago Negueruela, said after the session of the Consell de Govern yesterday, that “the date of February 28th was set according to the health and infection situation at that time, but does not mean that we must use the deadline of February 28th”.

“The February 28th date was set according to the health and contagion situation at that time, but it does not mean that we use the February 28th deadline”.

Negueruela pointed out that in the next meetings of the Social Dialogue Table and health experts the situation will be studied and, depending on the number of cases, it will be decided whether or not to lift the covid passport requirement. In any case, everything points to the requirement of the covid passport being lifted as of next week, since a meeting with the social agents is scheduled and the issue will be addressed, as stated by the spokesperson.

“We do not want to speculate, but it is clear that the covid passport has worked and has encouraged vaccination, but decisions will be taken depending on the current situation,” said Negueruela at the press conference after the Consell de Govern.

On the other hand, the spokesman of the Govern referred to the decision of the central government to eliminate the use of masks indoors, which will be adopted next Thursday in the Council of Ministers.

Iago Negueruela recalled that the president of the Govern, Francina Armengol, had expressed caution about the removal of the masks. Negueruela insisted that the “decision was taken by consensus in the framework of the Interterritorial Health Committee and, therefore, the Balearic Islands is in agreement”.
