Storm affects maritime transport
The port of Ibiza remained closed to traffic yesterday afternoon for just over an hour and a half due to the strong wind and coastal phenomena, according to Ports de Balears. On the other hand, the port of La Savina was not closed, although the shipping companies cancelled their routes from early afternoon.
The Pitiusas, yesterday on orange alert, recorded wind gusts of up to 80 kilometers expected until midnight, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). At sea, winds of force seven to eight are expected, from the west and northwest, with waves of three to five meters high. A large tree collapsed on the statue of tribute to the hippies in the port of Ibiza, although it did not cause any damage.
Baleària has cancelled several trips of the ship ‘Ramon Llull’ scheduled for today Friday between Ibiza, Formentera and Denia and the departures from Denia to Formentera and from Denia to Ibiza at 8.30 am; from Formentera to Ibiza at 11.15 am; from Ibiza to Formentera and from Ibiza to Denia at 6 pm and, finally, from Formentera to Denia, at 7 pm today due to the storm forecast. At the closing of this edition no major incidents had been recorded in Ibiza. In the early afternoon, firefighters from the Parque Insular de Bomberos had to remove a metal sheet that was detaching from the roof of a gas station due to the force of the wind. The intervention, in Sant Joan de Labritja Avenue, in Ibiza, was attended by four firefighters with a ladder truck and a light vehicle.
The forecast of the Aemet is that the squall ‘Ciarán’ keep this Friday the yellow alert for wind gusts of up to 70 kilometers until 18 hours.
In Formentera the effects of the storm have been felt especially on the west side of the island, as in the beach of ses Illetes, which has virtually disappeared. In addition to the storm, the sea level has risen due to low pressure, causing the water to reach the side of the dune and has taken several protection posts. In the west of s’Estany des Peix, the water has also flooded several stretches of road through which circulates with difficulty and has left several boats stranded.
