Fire at Ibiza scrapyard causes alarm in Ca na Negreta

The Santa Eulària City Council has ordered residents to close their windows to avoid poisoning

Yesterday a fire burned an area of 60 square meters of scrap metal – mostly scrapped vehicles – at the premises of Ca na Negreta recycling centre, on the road between Ibiza and Santa Eulària. Firefighters were alerted to the start of the fire at 7.18pm by workers at the centre and were able to control the blaze at around 11.40 that night. No-one is known to have been injured or intoxicated.

According to what the Fire Service told Diario de Ibiza, the fire started in the scrapyard’s open-air warehouse, where vehicles are stacked and compacted into scrap metal. A worker in the area has also indicated that the flames could have been caused by a phone battery that may have slipped into the waste. Although petrol and flammable material is removed from inside the vehicles before they are turned into scrap, the fire service explained that there is usually some residue that helps to fuel the fire. The fire mainly affected a pile of cars that had been converted into scrap metal and, during the firefighting, a crane had removed and separated the metal containers to facilitate firefighters’ work. The flames did not go beyond the scrapyard boundaries at any time.
