The citizen platform A Vila en Bici, created with the aim of promoting a network of bike lanes in the municipality and the driving force behind some of the projects currently planned, will offer a programme of activities and information campaigns during the month of April to promote the use of bicycles in the city. This group, together with the Ibiza Town Hall and the Consell, has added Vila to the campaign ’30 Días en Bici’ (30 Days by Bike) , which runs throughout the month of April and has the participation of 107 Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American cities.
Every Saturday from the 9th to the 30th of next month, 16-kilometer routes will be organized in the municipality of Eivissa, starting from s’Alamera. Each of these days will offer two routes, at 10am and 12pm, and all interested persons over twelve years of age can participate, with prior registration at Can Manolo Bikes.
In addition, two bicycle self-repair workshops will be offered in the Plaza de Sa Graduada on Friday April 8th and 22nd, according to Mar López, one of the spokespersons for Vila en Bici. All the activities included in this monthly initiative will be announced and updated on A Vila en Bici’s social networks and the campaign’s official website, www.30diasenbici.com.
Citizen Support for the bike
During the presentation of this campaign, held yesterday at the Ibiza Town Hall, both the Councilor for Mobility, Aitor Morrás, and the island director of Transport, Roberto Algaba, highlighted the work of the platform A Vila en Bici as the driving force behind a network of bicycle lanes that are beginning to be planned both in the city of Eivissa and in other municipalities. In fact, some of the proposals of this group have already been carried out, as in Avenida Bartomeu de Roselló, to be implemented, as in the case of the future lane for individual vehicles that is being prepared with the reform of Avenida de Isidor Macabich.
One of the spokespersons for A Vila en Bici, Héctor Bonet, recalled that their central proposal is based on two main bike lanes that cross the city horizontally along the avenues of Isidor Macabich and Bartomeu de Roselló, as well as a vertical axis [planned for calle Extremadura].
At present, the City Council is finalizing the project to enable a provisional bike lane on the E-10, according to Morrás, so that it can be ready without waiting for the reform of this ring road by the Consell, which is the current owner of the road.
A Vila en Bici stresses that this last stretch is essential to start shaping a proper network, as it will connect the ses Figueretes roundabout with the Recinte Ferial and will connect with the rest of the lanes that should form the network. On the one hand, it will reach the Avenida de Sant Jordi or paseo de ses Figueretes, which would allow a continuous route to Platja d’en Bossa and Sant Jordi.
Similarly, at the entrance to Vila, the E-10 bike lane will link up with the bike lane at Isidor Macabich, which will continue on to Bartomeu de Roselló, the port and Paseo Joan Carles I or Avenida 8 d’Agost, to reach Jesús and Talamanca. Finally, the old Camino de Can Murtera is also being fitted out, which will connect from the Ignasi Wallis roundabout to the port.
It is about creating a safe and well-planned network of bike lanes, although before it is completed it may seem that they are unconnected stretches of 100 meters here or 200 meters there,” said Héctor Bonet. This spokesman recalled that the platform A Vila en Bici already has the support of 70 organisations, including neighborhood associations, conservationists and schools.
