Climate activists storm Ibiza beach club to expose “incompatible” lifestyles of the rich

They entered the venue with a banner reading "Your Luxury, Our Climate Crisis".

Activists from the environmental organisations Futuro Vegetal and Extinction Rebellion have taken part in a protest at a luxury beach club in Cala Jondal, Ibiza, to warn of the “incompatibility of sustaining the lifestyle of the mega-rich and tackling the climate crisis”.

Protesters carried banners reading “Private Jets and Mega Yachts=Climate Energy Injustice”, “You consume, others suffer” and “Your luxury, our climate crisis”, as indicated by Futuro Vegetal in a statement.

During the protest, one of the activists painted on one of the walls of the premises the figure 1.5ºC, in reference to the temperature increase limit set by the Paris agreement and that “everything points to the fact that it will be exceeded this decade.”

The action is part of the campaign ‘Jets and yachts, the party’s over’,” called by the platform ‘Eivissa es rebel-la’, composed of various local climate organizations and which aims to “cause disruption throughout the week in Ibiza” and with which they demand “the prohibition of private jets and the elimination of luxury emissions”.

Futuro Vegetal has asked that, in a context of “climate crisis”, the luxury emissions of mega jets “should be the first to be stopped”. “An unbridled lifestyle of a minority cannot be allowed to impose climate chaos on the rest of the population.”the organization said.

“Society is suffering unprecedented extreme weather events that are going to get worse, so an immediate reduction in emissions is needed if worst-case scenarios are to be avoided, but in Ibiza a lifestyle is being promoted that is destroying the planet and the lives of millions of humans and other animals,” Vegetal Future has argued, to which it added that “following this model will mean not being able to grow food.”

The activists were evicted from the premises by the establishment’s security personnel. This is the second action of the campaign, which began on Monday with an action by Futuro Vegetal at the door of a discotheque.
