FBI assists in operation cornering Sant Antoni hackers

An international police operation led by the British Crime Agency and involving the U.S. FBI and authorities from other countries has resulted in the hacking of the services of the LockBit cybercriminal group, to which are attributed the cyber-attacks suffered by the city councils of Calvià (Mallorca) and Sant Antoni (Ibiza), as well as by the City Council of Seville, with effects on the telematic procedures.

As reported by the British Crime Agency, as a result of this international collaboration, a disruption campaign has been launched against this organization of cyber pirates that happens to be the “most damaging group of criminals in the world”.

In this framework, and with the collaboration of Europol, two of LockBit’s alleged members have been arrested in Poland and Ukraine and some 200 crypto-economic assets related to the criminal group have been seized

In addition, u.S. authorities have announced that two defendant individuals for allegedly using LockBit’s services to deploy cyberattacks have been indicted, are in custody and will be prosecuted.

The agents, according to the British Crime Agency, have managed to infiltrate the group’s internal network and have succeeded in “taking control of LockBit’s services, compromising its entire criminal organization” and taking down 28 servers belonging to members of the cyber hacker group.

The British Crime Agency, like this, claims to have “taken control of LockBit’s primary management environment”, which allowed the group’s members to arm and launch the computer attacks; also controlling the organization’s site on the “dark web” or dark Internet, where members of the network hosted the data stolen in their actions with the “threat” of publication.

The agents have also obtained LockBit’s initial platform code and a large amount of information from its systems about the criminal group’s activities and about those who have worked with it and used its services to attack organizations and entities.

This operation, according to the British Crime Agency, “is just the beginning of a series of actions against LockBit” and its members.

It should be recalled that last weekend of January 13 and 14, the City Council of Calvià suffered a cyber-attack for which the hackers demanded up to 10 million euros to release the affected terminals. Days later, at the beginning of February, the City Council of Sant Antoni reported similar events.
