UD Ibiza defence flounders and goes home from Cartagonova in tatters

Escobar and Gálvez, who was sent off, both give away penalties on their debuts

It took eight games for UD Ibiza to suffer their first defeat in the Second Division, and just over half an hour before being dealt a second blow and a real drubbing in Cartagonova, a bad luck stadium for the Celestes. UD Ibiza, so far a revelation in the LaLiga SmartBank, played their worst game of recent seasons yesterday against a Cartagena team that made a laughing stock of the Ibizan side with a brutal 5-1 thrashing. An unrecognisable UD Ibiza once again succumbed to a heavy defeat at the Albinégro Stadium, where three years ago they lost 6-0 in Segunda B, revealing serious defensive problems on their travels.

Luis Carrion’s side could have taken an early lead when, after just three minutes, Gastón Silva hit the post after beating the Celeste defence. Shortly after, Vazquez came close to making it 1-0 with a header from a corner and after the first quarter of an hour, Goldar blocked a neat through ball into space for Rubén Castro, who was poised to shoot past Germán. After several deflections, Delmás hooked a right-footed shot from outside the area that sailed over the crossbar. Okazaki then made his breakthrough for Cartagena after taking advantage of a poor delivery from Germán to Escobar, but the Japanese player was unable to find the target.

Despite pressure from the home side, it was Javi Lara who came closest to scoring after some excellent attacking pressure from Castel, but his delicate finish failed to find the target. That was the end for Ibiza.

A succession of errors by Manu Molina and Herrera, with a poor clearance in the box, led to an uncontrolled run from debutant Gonzalo Escobar, who took down Mo Dauda giving away a penalty following a VAR call. Rubén Castro made no mistake and put his side ahead before the 24-minute mark.
