UD Ibiza lose to Ponferradina in extra time and bow out of the cup

2-1. A bad clearance dooms UD Ibiza right at the start of extra time after forcing the equaliser at El Toralín

UD Ibiza said farewell tonight to their Copa del Rey campaign after losing in extra time against Ponferradina, also from the second division (2-1). Carcedo’s side went from strength to strength in the second round tie at El Toralín, but a bad clearance in the first minutes of extra time saw the visitors get the winning goal. The Celestes say farewell to their dream tournament and now focus on the last game of the year, with this Saturday’s visit to Can Misses by Sporting Gijón for the last game of the first half of LaLiga SmartBank, where they are in eighteenth place.

Fran Grima had the first shot after just three minutes, finishing from the edge of the area after a cross from the left by Escobar, once again in the starting line-up for the cup clash. Paul Antón’s right-footed shot was the Berzian reply in a very even start between two teams who took advantage of the occasion to make changes. The first shot on target came in the 20th minute, Saveiro’s cross-shot being saved on the ground by Álex.

The Berzian playmaker was finding space between the lines against an Ibiza side that could not find cracks in the solid home defence. Guerrero and Herrera were hardly in the game, while Diop and Appin tried without much success to control the midfield. The defensive discipline of both teams was drying up the attacks, and during the first half hour of play there were hardly any dangerous chances. Just after the half hour mark, Álex had to make a reflex save from Fran Grima’s cross, which he cleared to safety. The ensuing corner went wide without finding a finisher, much to the islanders’ relief.
