The Smart Ibiza project will start with the control of the capacity on 33 beaches and the geolocation of 15,000 rural dwellings

A mobile application will also provide real-time information on the capacity of nine public car parks on the island

The Consell de Ibiza plans to set up cameras to monitor the capacity of 33 beaches on the island next summer so that citizens and organisations will have real-time information on the number of users in these areas and know if the capacity limit is exceeded. This will be the first practical application of the Smart Ibiza project: Ibiza, Turismo Inteligente y Sostenible (Intelligent and Sustainable Tourism), run by the UTE Vodafone-KapschIbiza with a total cost of nearly 4.2 million euros, as explained at a press conference yesterday by the second vice president of the Consell de Ibiza, Javier Torres, the island director of Innovation, Xavi Santamaria, and the director of Vodafone on the Balearic Islands, Antonio Alvarez. Citizens will access this information through a mobile application.

To control the capacity of the beaches, a system of serveillance cameras and software for data management will be installed. It is still pending the selection of all the beaches and the signing of agreements with the municipalities. Torres pointed out that care has been taken to integrate the cameras into the landscape.

In the first phase of the development of the project is also includes the geolocation of 15,000 rural homes with access routes to them to facilitate access for emergency services if necessary. Torres explained that the municipality of Sant Joan already has this tool, but now plans to “improve and expand it to the rest of the island”. Formentera also has geolocated rural dwellings on the island.

The head of the Vodafone telephone company on the Balearic Islands explained that 430,000 euros of the overall budget will be spent in the remainder of the year, and by the end of 2022, one million euros. The project is scheduled to take 25 months to complete and, according to Antonio Álvarez, the largest part will be carried out in the last phase, from 2023 onwards.
