The autonomous Executive has finally backed down. After the controversy of requiring the Covid passport in “hospitality establishments”, the obligatory nature of the covid certificate has been extended to bars and cafeterias with a capacity greater than 50 people. The Government claimed yesterday that this change has been brought about by the increase in the number of coronavirus cases on the island, although the truth is that the decree published in the BOIB, which came into force last December 4, already provided for restrictions on these premises to be included in the term “hospitality establishments”. Be that as it may, the measure must be approved by the High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands (TSJB), as occured with the limitations on nightclubs and restaurants.
Negueruela stresses that all restrictions have been agreed with employers and unions in the Bureau of Social Dialogue
With the new changes, which the Government estimates will be operational until January 24, the requirement of the passport covid is as follows: it will be mandatory to show the covid certificate in restaurants, bars and cafes with a capacity of 50 people, in addition to clubs, nightclubs, dance halls and dance and cocktail bars or concert cafes. According to the spokesman of the Balearic Executive, Iago Negueruela, the restrictions are also extended to areas with catering service located in tourist accommodation, sports facilities, recreational centers for the elderly and betting and gambling establishments.
In the words of the Councillor for Economic Model, Tourism and Labour, the aim of this new package of measures is to “make spaces with a higher concentration of people safer” in the context of increased infections and before “the imminent Christmas holidays”. Negueruela recalled that all the restrictions have been agreed with employers and trade unions in the Social Dialogue Table.
