Lack of materials affecting the Balearic Islands does not prevent recovery but “hinders” it

The Impulsa Foundation warns that the shortage is causing a rise in inflation

The shortage of supplies that is affecting the Balearic Islands, like the rest of the world, will not prevent the important economic growth of the islands this year, but it is an obstacle that will make it more difficult, according to Professor of Applied Economics and director of the Impulsa Foundation, Antoni Riera.

From this organisation it is estimated that the increase in the economy of the islands at the end of this year, pending the closure of the third quarter, could move to around 10% and even exceed it. But it is no secret that the “rebound” that is being registered is “hindered” due to two elements that are also linked: the shortage of supplies and the growth of inflation.

Antoni Riera indicates that the international economy is currently going through a period of adaptation after the pandemic, which is affecting the distribution chain (the shortage of truck drivers, for example, is highlighted) and can also be explained by the fact that the production chain has been diverted during this period towards other needs generated by covid-19.

This explains why, at a time when demand is growing, there is a shortage of some products, and why raw materials are seeing their prices double or even increase fivefold.

The director of Impulsa points out that this situation means that the shortage of supplies and delays in their delivery affect practically all business sectors.
