Britney Spears has revealed she had an abortion during her relationship with Justin Timberlake in an excerpt from her long-awaited biography. This is one of several confessions in ‘The Woman in Me’, due out on 24 October, in which the pop star also talks about her controversial legal guardianship by her father, who barred her from taking control of her life and finances for 14 years.
“If it had been up to me alone, I would never have done it“, Spears writes about the abortion, in an excerpt published exclusively by ‘People’ magazine on Tuesday. “But Justin was sure he didn’t want to be a father“, adds the singer, who assures that he “wasn’t happy about the pregnancy at all”.
“He said that we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were so young,” Spears explains. “It is, to this day, one of the most difficult experiences of my life,” she confesses about the situation she experienced.
In the book, Spears talks about how she met Timberlake when they were both child performers at Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club. Several years later, they started dating and became one of the most notorious couples in the industryuntil they separated in 2002.
Legal guardianship
After her breakup with Timberlake, Spears had two children, Sean and Jaydenwith her second husband Kevin Federline. But in 2007 she suffered a nervous breakdown which had a lot of repercussions, including an attack on a paparazzi’s car at a gas station. The guardianship of her father, Jamie Spears, began after that incident, in 2008.
At a court hearing in 2021, the singer told the court that the guardianship prevented her from removing an intrauterine device even though she wanted to get pregnant. “The guardianship stripped me of my femininity, turned me into a girl,” Spears writes in another excerpt from the book. “I think about how my father and his associates had so much control over my body and my money for so long, it makes me sick,” she adds.
The conservatorship ended in November 2021 by court decision. Spears was pregnant in 2022, but lost the baby. In August of this year, her third husband, Sam Asghari, announced that they were divorcing.
