“Vaccines, in arms, not in the fridge”

More than 300,000 vaccinations are stored in the islands' hospitals and health warehouses

The refrigerators, freezers and deep freezers of the islands’ hospitals, currently have “more than 300,000” vaccine doses against the coronavirus, more than enough to add third doses and complete the vaccination schedule of those who have not yet received the first, said the director of Ib-Salut care, Eugènia Carandell.

“We would like them to be in people’s arms, not in the refrigerators,” confessed the expert, who hopes that in October, with the end of the tourist season, many hospitality workers who have not yet done so will show up to be vaccinated. “They have a lot of work. Perhaps they have not done so due to their work schedule and now they will be vaccinated,” continued the health care director, who noted that last weekend “an upturn” in vaccination among children under 19 years of age was observed in the face of the start of the school year.

Carandell acknowledged that there are still about 8% of health workers who do not have the full guideline and that there is a percentage of people who have not showed up for their second dose. “Everyone is followed up,” said the director of care, who said this may be due to different reasons: “That they have recovered from coronavirus and we are unaware or perhaps they have been vaccinated in another community”. All of them are called to find out what has happened and, if they have forgotten, provide them with an appointment.
