The most frequently stolen items by guests in luxury hotels, including those in Ibiza

Towels, bathrobes, clothes hangers, pens, and cosmetic products rank among the most frequently taken items from five-star hotel rooms. This is according to a comprehensive list by the German guide Wellness Heaven, which also includes televisions, coffee machines, and even entire mini-bars among the top 20 most pilfered items.

In a comprehensive survey involving the managers of 1,376 hotels across Europe, a detailed inventory of the most commonly missing items from hotel rooms was assembled. Topping this list are towels, with 79.2% of hotels reporting thefts by guests. Bathrobes follow, with a 66.4% theft rate.

Guests also commonly take batteries for remote controls and clocks. Coffee machines have gone missing in 11.4% of the hotels surveyed, and in 8.9% of these establishments, televisions have been stolen.

The list by Wellness Heaven is even more extensive, covering thefts of items such as light bulbs, hairdryers, remote controls, mattresses, telephones, mini-fridges, plates, pillows, blankets, tablets, artwork, cosmetic products, pens, and hangers.

Remarkably, some thefts are quite audacious, such as the stealing of a mattress without detection. The survey includes several real-life examples: in Berlin, a hotel reported the theft of a rain shower head, a whirlpool shower, a toilet seat, and even an entire sink. Meanwhile, a spa in Germany had a guest who dismantled the stereo sound system in their room for their car.

In England, one audacious guest removed the room number from their door. In France, a guest was caught attempting to steal a stuffed boar’s head.

The Wellness Heaven study also notes that the items most frequently stolen vary based on the guests’ nationality. Germans and Britons commonly take towels and bathrobes, as well as cosmetics and toiletries. Austrians show a preference for crockery and coffee machines, while Americans often take pillows and batteries. Italians are inclined towards wine glasses, the Swiss towards hairdryers, the French favor televisions and remote controls, and the Dutch opt for light bulbs and toilet paper.

In Ibiza, one in every four hotels boasts a four or five-star rating.
