The absurdities of renting rooms and shared houses on Ibiza

The cost of renting continues to rise "intensely", according to Fotocasa.

Buying a house on Ibiza for an average income earner is a demoralizing adventure (even 40 square meter studios cost an average of 200,000 euros), renting is an almost impossible task (most of the affordable homes are only rented for the winter season) so for many the only option to have a roof to live under is to rent a room. But this is not easy either, and not only because of the handicap of living with strangers.

The online platforms for renting houses on Ibiza are full of ads for shared rooms, but most of them have a ‘but’.

Renting rooms is insanity

On Airbnb you can find an ad for renting one of the three beds in a room in the center of Ibiza. The hostess is very clear on the type of tenant she is looking for: “Single bed in shared room (women only) in ibiza. I only host women with little luggage. The place is not recommended for women with a lot of luggage”. The price is 20 euros per night, plus 15 euros cleaning fee and another 9 euros for the management. The strange thing about this ad is that it is no longer bookable as of February 14th. There are two plausible explanations for this: either the price will rise by then or all the beds are already booked.

On Idealista there is another offer near Avenida Isidor Macabich where a room is renting for 500 euros per month. In winter, because the advertiser makes it clear that from May the monthly payment increases to 850 euros.

The absurdities do not end here. The owner of a camper van rents a space to share the vehicle with him. And it is not an inexpensive accommodation, contrary to what might seem a priori: just 95 euros per night.

Many other ads for shared housing do not solve the problem for those who are looking for anything resembling a home on Ibiza: they are only offered for the winter. This is the case for a room in calle Vía Romana at 520 euros per month, which is available “from November for a few months”, without specifying anything else. And another in Sant Jordi, where a room is offered for 600 euros but only until March. In addition, couples, pets and minors are not allowed, and the ideal tenant is between 28 and 40 years old.
