The best place to see the meteor shower in Ibiza’s sky

Along with the Perseids, this meteor shower, the Leonids, is one of the most awaited astronomical spectacles of the year.

Ibiza, due to its low light pollution, is a privileged place to view astronomical luminous phenomena like this meteor shower.

From November 16th until 18th, the climax of one of the most anticipated natural spectacles of the year along with the Perseids: the Leonids shower will take place.

These shooting stars are composed of particles of tiny microns and others of several centimeters detached from the comet Tempel Tuttle, which circles the Sun every 33 years.

View the meteor shower with the naked eye, without telescopes

A wide field of view is advisable because the speed at which the meteors cross the sky is about 59 kilometers, so telescopes and binoculars in this case can cause an opposite effect in observing them. Your own eyes become your best ally.

It is recommended to look to the northwest, in the opposite direction to the moon so that its glow does not interfere. The perfect time range to see this Leonid shower will be between 1:00 and 3:00 hours. In addition, being in a waning moon phase will improve the visibility of this phenomenon.

Although this phenomenon is repeated every year, it is every 30 years when there is a massive meteor shower. But 2022 will be a normal year, without a striking numbers of shooting stars, and it will not be until 2031 when the next big shower will occur.
