How to see the Pink Moon

The Pink Moon the second full moon of spring, rises today and will be visible until Thursday, although other celestial bodies such as Mars, Saturn and Mercury will also be visible alongside it, for those who can and want to see it.

This april full moon will rise today and reach its peak around 23:30 hoursand will continue through Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Keys to see it

The best way and time to see the full moon will be on a open area just before moonrise (Old Farmer’s Almanac offers a moonrise calculator to help determine this).

Although the full moon in April is called a Pink Moon, it is not really pinkbut is named after the pink flowers of the creeping phlox (or moss phlox) blooming in North America, one of the first flowers to bloom during spring.

The Rose Moon is the fourth full moon of the year and the second full moon of the spring, and marks the first day of the Jewish holiday of Passoverit is also known as the Passover Moon; and by other names, including Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon and Fish Moon, according to NASA.

Lunar cycle

There is a full moon every month because the lunar cycle lasts 29.5 days, but they do not always fall on the same day. The moon passes through eight phases during its cycle: new moon, waxing fourth crescent, waxing fourth crescent, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, waning third crescent and waning fourth crescent. When the moon enters the full moon phase, it appears as a perfect circle in the sky because it the entire face of the moon facing the Earth is illuminated by the sun’s rays.

The Paschal Moon, also known as the Easter Moon, is the first full moon after the vernal equinox and helps determine the date of Easter. Easter always falls on the Sunday after the Easter Moon, which occurred on March 24 this year. So, although the March full moon was the Easter Moon this year, sometimes the April full moon earns that title. Next year’s Paschal Moon will fall at 12:22 a.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2025. However, if the moon falls on a Sunday, then Easter will land on the following Sunday, according to Royal Museums Greenwich, so the Easter will fall on April 20, 2025.
