Ibiza generates 600kg of waste per inhabitant, 35% and 47% more than in Mallorca and Menorca

The production of waste last year in Formentera was 430kg per capita

The production of waste in Ibiza last year reached a total of 104.680 tons, which means 600kg per capita, the highest figure by far in the Balearic Islands: 35% more than in Mallorca (445kg per person), 47% more than in Menorca (407kg) and 39.5% more than inFormentera (430kg). The Balearic average stood at 463kg in 2020, 24% less than in 2019 as a result of the effects of the covid health crisis. The decline in Ibiza stood at 27%, the largest also recorded in the whole of the islands of the archipelago. In Mallorca waste production fell by 24%, in Menorca by 20% and in Formentera by 21%.

Ibiza generates 18% of the total waste in the Balearic Islands; Mallorca, 73%; Menorca, 7%, and Formentera, 1%. This is the result of the analysis of the Balearic Islands municipal waste management system conducted by Pau Villabona and presented yesterday by the Balearic Minister of Environment, Miquel Mir, which also found that Ibiza lags behind the rest of the islands in selective collection, with 16% of mass waste, according to data from last year. In Mallorca it reached 20%; in Menorca 21% and in Formentera, 25%, although with a drop of 10% compared to 2019. In contrast, on the other three islands the variation with respect to the year before covid was “minimal”.

Improvement in Ibiza in 2021

In any case, the general director of Waste, Sebastià Sansó, pointed out that this year in Ibiza there should be an increase in the selective collection of waste (for the first time organic matter is also separated) after the launch late last year of the new sorting plant in the Ca na Putxa landfill.

Ibiza is the only island of the archipelago that is above the target set in the new Balearic law on waste and polluting soils for 2019, which stipulated that before this year the mass production of waste should be set at 473kg per inhabitant. However, the report acknowledges that this target has been missed due to the drop in activity due to the pandemic.
