Fuel prices continue to fall in the midst of debate on the extension of the fuel bonus

Fuel prices: The cost of gasoline is down 2.8% in the last seven days, while diesel is 3.6% cheaper than a week ago

Gasoline and diesel fell again during the last week to mark their lowest prices since October and February, respectively, while waiting for the Government to decide in the next few days whether to extend the fuel discount of 20 cents per liter that has been applied since April to all consumers.

According to data released Thursday by the Oil Bulletin of the European Union (EU), which collects the average price recorded in more than 11,400 Spanish service stations between November 29th and December 5th, the price of both fuels after applying the discount stood at 1.488 and 1.563 euros, respectively.

With these values, the cost of gasoline has decreased 2.8% in the last seven days, while diesel is 3.6% cheaper than a week ago.

Thus, during the last week gasoline, which has fallen for the third time in a row, marked its lowest price since the first week of October, while diesel continues its downward trend after adding its sixth consecutive drop and reaching levels not recorded since February, before the Russian invasion of Ukraine began.

End of the fuel bonus?

The continued fall in both fuels comes a few weeks before the end of the fuel bonus, which has been applied since April and until the end of the year to alleviate the effects of the war in Ukraine, and which the Executive is studying whether to extend only for certain groups.

If current prices are compared with those of both fuels at the beginning of the year, gasoline is only 0.6% more expensive than then, while the price of diesel is 16% higher.

However, they are well below their historical maximums – 23.3% and 17.7%, respectively – recorded in June at the height of the price escalation caused by the conflict initiated by Russia.

At current prices, filling an average 55-litre tank with petrol costs around 82 euros, compared with almost 86 euros if diesel is used, which means paying exactly the same as in the same week of the previous year if filling up with petrol, but 12 euros more for diesel.
