1 arrested for false bomb threat with a briefcase at the Consell de Ibiza

Bomb threat: The closure of Avenida de España as a precaution for nearly three hours caused heavy traffic jams.

A suitcase abandoned at the door of the Consell de Ibiza set off alarms yesterday afternoon with the possibility that it might contain an bomb, although in the end it turned out to be a false bomb threat for which yesterday the Policía Nacional arrested a 46 year old man of Spanish nationality.

Around 5:15pm, Consell staff alerted the Policía Nacional of the presence of the suspicious suitcase, whose agents evacuated the staff who were working at that time (cleaning, security and employees of the Department of Transport and Tourism) immediately cordoned off the area and, with the collaboration of the Vila Policía Local, closed the traffic on Avenida de España from the round-about of ses Figueretes. This closure caused large traffic jams and long queues of vehicles in the adjacent roads.

Technicians confirm the briefcase did not contain a bomb

Shortly after, the technicians specialized in deactivation of explosive devices (Tedax) of the Guardia Civil came to the headquarters of the highest institution of Ibiza. The experts examined the briefcase and confirmed that the suitcase did not contain any explosive device, only papers.

Around 8pm, Avenida de España reopened to traffic and normality was restored in the area.
