Charging electric cars will no longer be free at public charging points in the Balearic Islands

Each municipality on the islands will be able to set the price it wants, although the agreed common tariff is 25 cents per kilowatt hour

The Balearic Islands, specifically Mallorca and Menorca, have initiated a pilot plan to charge for the use of public electric vehicle (EV) charging points, a response to the financial strain these free services have placed on local municipalities.

The Balearic Energy Institute (IBE) has set a common rate of 25 cents per kilowatt hour to help mitigate costs, although municipalities have the flexibility to adjust this rate. This plan includes a comprehensive approach involving a standard ordinance for uniform implementation across the islands and a detailed pricing and charging information available on the Melib mobile app. Additionally, a fee of three euros per hour is introduced after four hours of free parking at these charging points, which number around 880, some powered by solar energy.

This initiative represents a strategic effort to balance the demand for EV infrastructure with fiscal sustainability for local governments in the Balearic Islands.
