Cala Vedella is Dutch paradise in Ibiza

The shops and restaurants of this region of Ibiza anticipate a good season and highlight the Dutch visitors, who have become their main clientele with the Germans and the French

Cala Vedella is one of the areas of the island that has been least affected by UK restrictions, because the vast majority of tourists staying in this area are Dutch. Moreover, some residents say that Cala Vedella is a paradise that very few know about, but when tourists come, they always want to return. “I often welcome visitors saying: welcome to Cala Vedella, welcome to the island’s unknown paradise,” explains José Fernández, manager of the Vedella Beach Bar by Jordi and Coco.

The owners of the Cala Vedella establishments say they are very happy because they didn’t expect so many people to come. Pascual Ripa, who has been working as a hammock-maker on the beach for six years, explains hopefully: “For the last month or so, people have started to arrive and there have been many more than we all expected”.

The vast majority of tourists coming to the cove this year are families from the Netherlands. “One of the good things that has happened to us is that we are not very dependent on English tourism. A lot of Dutch people come to this area and they tend to be families who spend a lot in the bars and buy a lot in the shops. Before, only Germans came here, but little by little things are changing”, says Cristina Viladoms, owner of the little shop Boutique el Zoco.

Another of Cala Vedella’s characteristics is that it does not have a large number of hotels nearby, as is the case in other coves in Ibiza. “Most of our tourism is second home tourism, in which case some of them are English people who work on the island in summer. But the vast majority are Dutch and some Germans and French. This means that there is more life in the cove, it is not a hotel zone”, continues José Fernández.
