A emergency technician has been admitted to the Can Misses hospital after suffering a brutal assault by the relatives of a psychiatric patient whom he had gone to treat.

The events took place on Friday at 6:00pm in Sant Antoni when a mobile ICU team went to assist a psychiatric patient who was sitting in a doorway on a public street. As reported by the 061 communication service, the man aggressively responded to the doctor and kicked him, whereupon an emergency technician intervened to his aid and placated the man. At that moment, relatives of the patient appeared and began to violently attack the technician.

According to works council sources, the family members assaulted the health worker with anything they found at hand, “including an ashtray,” and bit his fingers and testicles in addition to breaking his nasal septum and cutting open his eyebrow. As a result of these blows, the technician was admitted to the Can Misses hospital as an emergency patient.

The works council of Gestión Sanitaria y asistencial de las Balears (Gsaib) has again denounced this type of attacks, has requested a “forceful” attitude from the authorities to stop these situations, and has recalled that health personnel have the rank of public authority.
