A 35-year-old British man died yesterday after drowning in the area of Punta Galera, in the municipality of Sant Antoni.

Officers from the Guardia Civil, Sant Antoni Local Police and emergency personnel arrived at the scene of the incident, but were unable to save the man, despite performing CPR once his body had been rescued.

The incident occurred after six o’clock yesterday evening when a call was received, alerting Emergencies 112 to the incident, according to the peripheral communications office of the Guardia Civil of the Balearic Islands.

The 061 emergency service and the Guardia Civil reported that the man suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest while freedive training. Some British media, however, have reported that the incident took place while the victim was practicing underwater photography.

The man’s body was taken by sea to the port of Sant Antoni in the boat ‘Posidonia’ of Salvamento Marítimo.

The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation into the incident.
