Surprisingly, mass tourism has returned to airports without resulting in the return of conflicts on board airplanes. According to the statistics on disruptive passengers compiled by the Spanish Aviation Safety Agency (AESA), only 51 cases have been recorded up to August at Spanish airports, with 2 of them at Palma and another 2 at Ibiza.

This record is a far cry from that reported last year, when only up to July Ibiza airport had already accumulated 22 cases and Son Sant Joan, 27. At that time, in all the airports as a whole, the cases amounted to 238. Generally, the airports of Palma and Ibiza were among the first in this dishonorable ranking in which cases are counted for behaviors that can endanger air safety due to conflictive behaviors, in most cases linked to excessive alcohol consumption.

The picture is reminiscent of the first summer of the pandemic, which then could only be linked to a sharp drop in passenger traffic.

The return of tourism appears calmer

Therefore, in 2022, with the return of tourism and a Son Sant Joan full of passengers -until August almost 20 million have been registered according to AENA statistics, just 5% less than before the pandemic-, the AESA only reports two sanctions imposed on travelers at Palma airport, corresponding to two German passengers, according to the origin of the flights.

Also at Ibiza airport, conflicts on board the aircraft has been reduced to two sanctions on two Spanish passengers, while last year, up to July, there were already 22 cases. And at the Menorca airport there have been no incidents involving passengers, according to EASA statistics.

Globally, the agency has reported 51 sanctions on disruptive passengers. Most occurred in March (17) and August (another 17), while in July, the other month of mass tourism, there were only 5 cases.
