Ibiza reinvents itself again with a new tourist offering that follows in the footsteps of other world-famous yoga locations like Goa and Risshiket in India, Koh Samui (Thailand) or Bali (Indonesia) in the search for relaxation and spirituality. The proximity to the mainland, the ease and speed of transport, safety and the attractions of Ibiza have boosted a new industry that, like music, clubbing, sailing, gastronomy, luxury and culture have catapulted it as a top international destination. This new form of off-season tourism, which is an advantage for deseasonalization, is interesting for its high purchasing power, its respect for the environment, the tranquility of their stay, tolerance and also consumption of local sustainable gastronomy.
Yoga, a new tourist development
These arguments place the yoga and wellness industry as an alternative, unthinkable until recently, for a new tourist development of the island and provides at the same time a deeper understanding through classes, lectures, retreats, rituals, conferences and mindfulness in the search for wellness in turbulent times.
Yoga is a traditional Eastern discipline whose practice in its various forms such as iyengar, hatha yoga, kundalini, vinyasa, quantum and ashtanga, among others, provides great benefits to the body and mind. Ibiza has for decades been a place of refuge for yogis, especially in the north of the island, Sant Joan, Sant Miquel and surroundings.
This development of mind and spirit has brought to the island in the last year personalities, teachers, thinkers, gurus and writers of international renown such as Marisa Peers, coach and writer Roxie Nafousi, Dr. Barbara Sturn, yoga teachers like the famous Xuan Lan, who has thousands of followers on her online classes, has been an introducer to yoga at Formentera Zen with a massive masterclass and at Six Senses Ibiza with a Daily Morning Yoga, or Maya Fiennes, writer, music composer and creator of kunda dance. Also yogi models like Mireia Canalda, who promotes the yoga offering for the City Council of Sant Joan, or Veronica Blume, who gave a large outdoor class on the esplanade of the port of Ibiza. Wellness gastronomy also has its own personalities such as the Brazilian chef and nutritionist Bela Gil, daughter of the famous singer-songwriter Gilberto Gil, who develops eco-friendly and sustainable gastronomy. Ayurvedic doctor and Indian guru Jamuna Mishra, who has a record and international recognition for having helped cure 48 covid patients “with natural medicine”, gave a spiritual retreat with Maya Fiennes and Lorena Giovalisco recently in Sant Rafel. Six Senses presents this week Alma Festival with workouts, quatum yoga, pilates, bio hacking, cacao ceremony, hot and cold therapy and kundalini with Lara Baumann, Taryn Toomey and Josef Ajram among others.
