Between charcoal and remains of posidonia the workers of Herbusa and Servicios Submarinos were working yesterday at noon on the beach of s’Estanyol to remove the debris that washed up after the sinking of the 45 meter yacht ‘Aria SF’, which caught fire a few days ago in Cala Saona, on Formentera. “It’s a very hard job, because they won’t let us remove the posidonia and algae from the beach and we are looking for the remains among them”, commented one of the employees of Servicios Submarinos while continuing a task they had started at 8 in the morning.
“Apart from removing the debris that the yacht has left on land, we are going to put type of towel that absorb the oil that is currently in the sea”, added the worker from Servicios Submarinos, who was working together with Herbusa workers and the cleaning boats from the Consell Insular. According to them, only the day before they had removed up to 150 kilograms of material.
Javier Galdรณn, an Herbusa worker, had been cooperating with Servicios Submarinos since 8:30am. “There is a lot of charcoal and everything is very scattered, although now it is not as dirty as before,” he commented, while carrying a package of garbage bags to be able to continue with the day.
“I always clean beaches and when I heard that this happened I came to help with the net”, explained Marzia, a woman who has been on the island for ten years and was cleaning debris in the water on a voluntary basis. “It is not only this incident, but how dirty the beach is in general”, she added, affected by all the pollution she found among the debris and oil in the sea. During the time she had been collecting debris she filled almost a garbage bag, but the remains did not stop coming out from amongst the posidonia and the waves.
The state of the water, with iridescent stains of hydrocarbons, made the bathers stay on the shore. “We arrived at 10 o’clock in the morning and we still haven’t bathed and even if it was sunny we still wouldn’t,” commented Yurena Boronat, a resident who decided to go to s’Estanyol. “The workers were already in action, very dedicated to clean the beach,” added Boronat, who stressed that they did not stop working since they arrived at the beach.
“They should investigate” concern for the seabed and posidonia
She also lamented that “until there is a spill, people do not take action”. “The wind comes from the north and can cause the waste to go towards Formentera,” she added, concerned about the state of the seabed: “They should investigate to make sure that nothing is left underwater.”
