Sant Antoni Patron Saint festivities: The SuperFlower returns

The Sant Antoni City Council presents an incomplete program of events just the day before the start of the festivities

By the skin of their teeth, the day before they start and just six days before the big patron saint’s day, it is difficult to believe a city council has taken so long to present a festival program. It’s as if the Sant Antoni City Council had forgotten that next Tuesday is Día de Sant Antoni. But finally, yesterday at the last minute the mayor of Portmanyí, Marcos Serra, and the councilman for Festivities, Miquel Tur, presented a program of events in which once again highlight beloved festivals such as the Flower, the World Rice Championship or the ‘Anem de palanca’, and others that are on their way to becoming solid events during the festivities, such as the Record Fair.

The program has been presented with a serious typo, since in its Catalan version, one of the most outstanding events, the Festival de Balls, Música i Cançó Popular de la Nostra Terra to be held this Sunday at 11am at the Cine Regio, was left off the program. A spokeswoman for the City Council has admitted this error and has assured that the corrected program will be reissued. This Festival also does not appear in the press release sent to the media, for unknown reasons.

The festivities start today and will last until February 25th, and this weekend starts with another of the most outstanding activities: the Flower Power Party, known this year as SuperFlower. This year it will be held in the area of the stalls of the Mercat, in the Passeig de ses Fonts, and will start at 12:30pm with a market, performances and surprises for the little ones by Acrobati-k. In the afternoon the flower atmosphere will continue and will finish up with a concert by The Groovy Brothers and musical entertainment by DJ Javi Box and Jordi Cardona.

‘Sopar de senalló’ and Sant Antoni’s Big Day

Another novelty is that the ‘Sopar de senalló’ will take place on January 16th in the stalls of the Mercat to welcome the feast of Sant Antoni. A party at the MErcat de sa Cooperativa will also be held for the first time on January 20th, with sobrasada torrada with xeixa bread and live music by the group Solpost Acústic.

Sant Antoni’s big day, January 17th will begin at 12 noon with the solemn mass, followed by a procession and the traditional blessing of animals, which will take place in front of the Town Hall. This will be followed by the release of pigeons by the Club Colombòfil Portmany and the ball pagès by the Colla Can Bonet. As a novelty, this year there will be live music in the stalls of the Passeig de ses Fonts from 2pm.
