The Marine Forum in Ibiza addresses the challenge of regenerating and protecting the Mediterranean Sea

This year's edition kicks off on Tuesday with 50 international, national and local experts

The fifth edition of the Marine Forum will begin on Tuesday in Ibiza with the participation of 50 international, national and local experts from different fields such as law, biology, education and business, who will analyse the health of the Balearic Sea in different sessions.

The new edition, focusing on the objectives of regenerate and protect the Mediterranean Seawill be inaugurated by Sylvia Earlebiologist, explorer and pioneer of marine activism, reported the organization.

This forum, unlike the previous ones, will be extended throughout the month until its closing on Sunday 26th at the Auditori es Caló de S’Oli de Sant Josep, with a conference by Héctor Salvadorthe first Spaniard to go down to one of the deepest points of the mariana Trenchto 10,706 meters, in the Siren’s Deep, the third deepest point in the world.

The challenge of marine conservation

On the first day, Tuesday, at the Maritime Station of es Botafoc, a round table will address the future challenges of marine conservation, with the participation of three specialists such as Maximiliano Bello, international expert in protection of marine areas; Michael Sealey, biologist expert in marine environmental legislation of Oceana in Europe; and Aniol Esteban, director of Marilles Foundation.

The program will continue on November 10 at the headquarters of the UIB with the activities ‘Approaches to the marine environment from the Academy: jurisprudence, tourism, archeology and education’. On this day, specialists from various fields, such as biologists, scientists, lawyers, teachers, educators, philologists, tourism professionals and entrepreneurs, will participate in various round tables with an integrative perspective that will focus on the marine environment.

On November 11, the blue economy will be addressed with a study of opportunities for a sustainable ocean economy in the Pitiusas and with presentations of blue economy initiatives of the Port Authority, Madblue and One Planet One Life. The day will end with a round table on successful practices of the blue economy with José Martínez, CEO of Pescaturismo; Gonzalo Coterillo, president of the National Association of Electric Boats, and Germán Alcayde, director of HRV Energy.

Be Blue Projects

On Friday, November 17, the fourth day of the forum will take place with the presentation of marine restoration projects that are being carried out in the Balearic Islands and other territories, with contributions from the Be Blue project of Vellmarí and Trasmapi, MedGardens, and a shallow bay restoration project in Menorca.

On the other hand, success stories in Mediterranean marine protected areas in Greece, Sicily or Cyprus will be analyzed, with presentations by entities that are part of the global network of Conservation Collective foundations.

The Marine Forum will also feature the screening in Sant Josep and Formentera of several chapters of the series ‘Arxipièlag Blau’ produced by the Marilles Foundation and IB3 TV, with a speech by Agustí Torres, president of Shark Med.

The promoters of the Marine Forum (Trasmapi, Marina Ibiza, OD Group, Fundación Marilles, Fundació Pachá, IbizaPreservation and Vellmarí), emphasizes that the fifth edition “consolidates this event as one of the main references in terms of dissemination on marine conservation in Spain”.
