Spike in male violence complaints: Ibiza reports a 13% increase in first quarter

Courts receive 205 complaints involving 152 women, 17% more than a year ago | Most are filed after police intervention

In the first quarter of the year, the courts of Ibiza received a total of 205 complaints of male violence by men against women with whom they were in an affective relationship or with whom they had already broken up, according to data published by the Observatory against domestic and gender violence of the General Council of the Judiciary. These complaints affect 152 women, of whom 82 are Spanish and 70 are foreign, all of them of legal age. The number of complaints has increased by 13% compared to the same period last year, when 182 were registered, involving 130 women (60 Spanish women, one of whom was a minor, and 71 foreigners). The number of women victims of abuse has risen by 17% from the first quarter of last year to this quarter.

As usual, most of the complaints were filed as a result of police intervention: 199, of which 130 were reported by the woman and 69 were due to the direct intervention of a law enforcement agency. Not a single complaint was initiated by a relative of the victim, and only six were filed directly by the victims in court.

37 protection orders

The courts of Ibiza approved 37 protection orders for 21 Spanish and 16 foreign women, with respect to 21 Spanish men and 16 of another nationality. The vast majority had already broken off their relationship (29), and only eight were still in a relationship. This data shows that the moment of separation is one of the most dangerous for women who suffer abuse by their partners, so experts advise them to ask for help and not to take risks. Between January and March of this year, 45 men were prosecuted, of which 43 were convicted (20 Spaniards and 23 foreigners) and two acquitted.

On the other hand, six women in Eivissa availed themselves of the dispensation from the obligation to testify as a witness, of whom three were Spanish and three foreigners.

The rate of victims of gender violence per 10,000 women was 18.4 across Spain, 1.7 points higher than in the first quarter of 2022. The Balearic Islands is above, with 26.

In the presentation of the data, the president of the Observatory, Ángeles Carmona, yesterday appealed to “all the people who surround the victim of gender violence, family members, friends, co-workers, to support them, to help them to get out of that circle of violence and to denounce as well.”

Carmona also thanked the work of the State security forces and corps, because “they are getting many women to feel safe to denounce”, as well as the “health professionals who through their injury reports get the judicial bodies to initiate a procedure to get that woman out to justice.” “If a criminal act has been witnessed, we all have the obligation to report it, especially those related to gender violence,” he insisted.
