Despite their different political ideologies, Formentera‘s island government joined Ibiza’s in calling for the same treatment as the Consell de Mallorca in the transfer of tourism management powers to the autonomous region as of 1 January. As this newspaper reported, the Consell de Ibiza has lodged objections to the proposed transfer, as has Formentera. In fact, the two island institutions pitiusas agreed yesterday to abstain in the vote on the proposal discussed in the technical report of the joint committee on the transfer of powers.
The first vice-president of the Consell de Ibiza, Mariano Juan, asked for explanations during the presentation of the reasons why the objections raised by his institution have not been answered (before voting on the transfer proposal). The Consell’s technical services have warned that the Govern is contemplating transferring more functions and services than Ibiza received in 1997, basically questions of tourist promotion.
The secretary of the presentation informed the representative from Ibiza that a number of the proposal’s paragraphs have been withdrawn, although Mariano Juan claimed that they had not been eliminated from the initial paragraphs, meaning that the changes were “not very substantial”. In any case, the secretary proposed voting the same way on the proposal with the intention of subsequently setting up a commission to study the scope of what has been transferred to the Consell de Mallorca and, based on this, “homogenise it”; in other words, transfer more resources to the Consells of Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca to bring the four islands into line in terms of tourism management.
