Formentera has started the season strongly and with good expectations from the tourism sector. The president of the island’s hoteliers, Juanma Costa, predicts that, according to data from the employer’s association, this will be “a very good season” if sales continue.
“We are very optimistic, things are going very well,” added Costa, and explained that throughout the month of June all establishments have been opening progressively and today “the Formentera’s hotel sector is one hundred percent open”.
A hopeful figure, although sales have been slow to close this month: “June has not been at capacity but I can say confidently that we are at 50%.”

The accommodation sector welcomes availability from hotels of all categories to tourist apartments and has around 10,000 beds. In April 2019, the plenary session of the Consell de Formentera modified the Insular Territorial Plan (PTI) to set the maximum number of tourist beds at 20,500, including beds that are marketed as tourist stays in rental houses.
The president of the hotel association was optimistic about the occupancy expectations especially for the months of July and August: “From the end of June and for July and August the season will be excellent,” he reiterated.
To reinforce his forecast, Costa assured: “Sales right now are being higher than those of 2019 at this time and we see in the daily rhythm that it is very, very high, so we are satisfied and happy with how it looks like the season will evolve. If everything continues like this we will have a very good season”, he anticipates.
Hotel entrepreneurs are already noticing that their customers are highly motivated (“they really want to go out and it shows,” says Costa) after the mobility restrictions that have marked the last year of the pandemic are being lifted.
Although most of the tourists who are booking are Spanish, Costa noted that the Italian market is beginning to move: โThe Italian tour operators are already working and want to go out. In addition, it must be taken into account that their incidence (of Covid) is lower than that of Spain, which helps mobility”.
Dutch tourism “is also moving and we are noticing it”
He added that Dutch tourism “is also moving and we are noticing it.” “It is a very important market, not only for this season, but for the future.” The French market is also becoming more and more present on the island.
