Armengol: “Europe at war must respond to the harsh reality of refugees”

Challenge: Armengol stresses the need to protect the Balearic public system because "it has saved more lives than any other" Claim: She affirms that the new tourism law has been "worked on with everyone" and the first education law in the Balearic Islands is the result of "community consensus".

The Russian “threat” to European values and the pandemic marked yesterday’s institutional speech for the Day of the Balearic Islands by the President of the Govern, Francina Armengol. On the events of this week in Ukraine she regretted “Russia’s aggression against the values that sustain Europe, which has exprienced decades of prosperity in peace, democracy and freedom” and maintained that “our values will prevail”. On covid she stated that “if we have been able to overcome the threat of the virus and protect our public welfare network and our businesses, we will overcome any challenge.”

Armengol claimed in her words that, since she has been in government, “this land has built solid and lasting consensus, agreements that have given light and stability in the worst of times and that allow us to look to the future”. Thus, in relation to the citizens of the Balearic Islands, she defended the fact that “these committed and supportive people have saved more lives than any other, and have demonstrated the strength of collective determination”. And she mentioned that “Europe at war has to respond to the harsh reality of the refugees”. A crisis that has been aggravated by Russia’s attacks.

The president of the Balearic Executive said that these awards connect “what we were with what we are, and today [La Lonja] becomes the stage for reuniting”. For the socialist, the Balearic Islands is “a diverse but united people, plural and with deep roots”.

The new tourism law also had its moment in the speech. The leader expressed that the commitment must be to tourism that “values and takes better care of its workers and that is both a leader and capable of regenerating our environment”. Armengol also sent a clear message to the opposition, which in recent weeks has intensified its criticism of the Govern: “The new tourism law has been worked on with everyone”. This statement even elicited a smile from opposition leaders, who listened attentively to the speech.

She also returned to praise this “dialogue-based society that a week ago was capable of converting the consensus of the educational community into the first education law in our history”. A challenge to the councillor Martí March and a jab, once again, at the opposition. Each of the words, praises and criticisms were well detailed to position a message full of nuances, some more direct and others more subtle.

The premise of the  speech was clear: the need to value the public system “which has now proved vital”. Armengol assured that the success of her decisions lies in “unity of action and dialogue”: “It has allowed us stability even in the worst moments and to take the most complicated decisions to speed up the recovery”. A recovery, she said, that has already begun “with force”. Thus, she explained that thanks to knowing “our priorities”, the Govern has has confirmed that “the path we set out was the right one”.
