Potato fair in Sant Josep celebrates the “queen” of the Ibizan countryside this Saturday

The town of Sant Josep will host this Saturday the first edition of the Fira de sa Patata Eivissenca (Eivissa Potato Fair)an initiative of the City Council to publicize “and highlight the value of this native variety, considered by many the queen of the Ibizan orchard,” explained from the Consistory. All this, coinciding with the harvest season this May. “We will take advantage of the fact that on Saturdays there is a craft market to set up a tent next to the Town Hall this week, where there will be presentations, showcookings (also for children), masterclass… And while all this is happening, the different establishments of the town will prepare dishes based on Ibizan potato”, in the words of Eva Ruiz, a technician of Tourism Promotion of Sant Josep.

Activities for all ages

This is what he explained this Tuesday to the press at the Can Talaies estate, as part of the presentation of the red potato campaign in Ibiza. “We will provide the same potato to the bars and restaurants thanks to [la empresa] Mister Chippy, so that everyone can participate in this gastronomic contest on equal terms,” explained Ruiz. In addition, between four and six o’clock in the afternoon there will be “activities for the little ones with the potato as the protagonist” in the surroundings of the town hall, so this fair is planned as “a fun day for the whole family”.

Programming

“Between 12 and 14 hours will take place in the tent installed next to the Town Hall different showcookings and a lecture. The chef of Can Berri Vell, Bruno Hernรกndez, will present ‘Una nova mirada a la tradiciรณ’ preparing a recipe with the Ibizan potato as the protagonist; Marรญa Josรฉ Amengual, author of the gastronomic blog ‘Dit i fet’, will present how to cook ‘L’olla podrida, una recepta oblidada’ with Ibizan potato; the chef Marga Orell will be in charge of teaching the little ones ‘Dolรงos i salats de patata per a infants’ and the doctor in nutrition Irene Roth will explain to all the assistants ‘Les propietats nutricionals de la patata: trencant els falsos mites'”, details the City Council. Also, there will be a popular tasting of the dish olla podrida, an old Ibizan recipe. “It contains, among other ingredients, bacon, Ibizan red potato, onion, sobrassada, black pudding and black pepper”. Registrations to participate in the contest for bars and restaurants are still open. “All of them will offer the public portions of the recipe they will prepare at a popular price of five euros.”
